Whatever: My favorite holiday

My very favorite holiday is TODAY!

American Independence Day...good ole' 4th of July!

I love it ...
... as a child of the cold war era propaganda with it's threat of nuclear war and risk of loss of freedoms such as religious expression and TCBY.
... as a grandchild of soldiers of World War II who did their duty and fought in trenches in France and built bridges in Ireland, far away from their beloved country.
...as a day when eating, hanging out with friends and family and lighting things on fire are our patriotic duty.
...as the holiday that is not commercialized and while opportunists do have sales, it is not the kick off to another commercialized holiday.
...as the celebration of US...hard working, hard playing, deeply flawed, but always optimistic Americans. This is our day to shine. Our birthday!

I know it can be considered corny to be patriotic, but I am proud to be American, even when we are showing our worst, even when we are dumb and self centered, even when we are wrong. The privilege we enjoy is great. Sometimes we take it for granted, but it is the best place to be from and the best place to live.

Happy Birthday, AMERICA! I  love you!
